  1. Been out of work since May 09.If anything there are signs of recovery in the building/architectural industries, just waiting for it to filter through to this sector.I’ve noticed more buidling services CAD jobs appearing. There are the odd few CAD jobs on agency websites, that in past had none for months. How are others finding it?Have you found employment, changed industries or still seeking work?

  2. O yes I must add “I have been working on a job that is now stopped because of the crappy and late drawings produced by your fellows.” Southern Water is the company (heard of it?). It was evident that the guy who drew the first draught had no idea what he was drawing. Six revisions later and still waiting for a full set. Drawings come from India.

    • Dave, I was made redundant at the start of the month, totally unexpected and it knocked me for six. I’m a mechanical design engineer in building services based in Dublin. It’s a wasteland here in Ireland. In the past month I have seen only one job advertised that matches my skills and experience. I’ve been looking towards London for the past few weeks and there seems to be a few positions been advertised but there are a lot of people on the job hunt out there. All in all it’s pretty crap.

  3. This was posted a few months ago and I would have agreed that things are bad but now I would answer “How long a list of names do you want to READ?” If you have a job thank your lucky stars!

  4. Hey All, it’s always nice to meet new people..Just wanted to introduce my self as new comer into the forum and for you all please feel free to ad me to your buddy list

  5. Some one said ‘I don’t want to get political’
Well I could not disagree more
The reason we find ourselves in this predicament is entirely political and corrupt politicians who only answer to their financial paymasters.

I wonder how many you poo pooed the talk of inevitable global disaster when we started these illegal wars.
Spending billions to kill and destroy foreign nations when those billions could have improved our own infrastructure never mind the hostility we face from third world nations and especially the Middle East.
    Democracy my ass.

I for one saw this coming in 2003 and started saving like crazy for the lean years. Enough to keep me for at least five years.

    • Yeh, I always save for a rainy day and here they are in the droves, I have saved enough money for 4 years to include a low paid Permanent job equivelent to £16 per hour!!! that is low pay for me!!!, I was earning £30 per hour a year ago!

  6. jordie, I do not know what area you live, You do not tell me,here. But in your situation, I would suggest you get in touch with The HVCA through the internet and ask what contractors are doing the work, you can also try Hays Montrose in Victoria office, via the net,you may get some answers there or other contracts that may be available.Keep us all posted.Good Luck

  7. Thanks Bill, do you or anyone else know of which consultants/ contractors have picked up the work, i have been out for long enough now and the agents cant seem to find me anything so i would like to ask them myself? thanks

  8. Jordie you are correct,Have you read what the national papers have said about this,if you read the Sunday Mail about a month ago it explained what is happening,I do not want to make a big thing about it here as I have said before, you only need to live in the area to apply. You have seen on the news aome weeks ago what is happening on some of the new generation site and the protesting, the same principle applies here.

  9. Yes I’m in the same Boat, gradually sinking, the only way to get ahead of this is to learn Structural Engineering, there’s plenty of work around!!! Re-inforced concrete and structural steel detailing in Cad, but I cant find a nearby college to learn in!

Maybe some of the structural Engineers are willing to Teach!!!

  10. Jordie,I just made a comment,I do not want to expand here about the olympics, forget the Olympics,it is fully taken all the requirements on staff,if we are lucky, when it gets into trouble and it will by 2011,then we may get someting from it,but do not bank on it.I am not going to get political here, here it is not the
the platform, that should be used for that purpose. But you must remember that we ar now in the open market with the whole of the EEC.

    • Thanks Bill, i appreciate what you are saying but isnt one of the ideas the olympic games stand for is re-generation and a boost to the economy where the games are being held?

  11. Elizibeth asked before about olynpic work! does anyone have any news or info? maybe as Dick says we should work together and help each other out. just an idea!

  12. There is no doubt about it, it is going toget worse than we have seen before, I agree with Dick above. It might be a good idea for all those that have no work for all of us to get together and organise ourselfs into a group, other wise it might be better for us all to start to look for a complete change. The food sector is doing well. It seems a terrible lose to the industy when it does pick up,all this experiance will be lost,we all have trained for such a long time, all that experience going to waste.

  13. I’m an Electrical Engineer, I’ve been out since June 08 dozens of interviews, nothing! never known anything like it 82 & 92 can;t touch this one

  14. Hi all – I have nearly 40 yrs experience as a draughtsman/co-ordinator in Building Services, this is the worst recession I have known, doom and gloom at every agency,I have written to over 20 Consultants and Contractors- only 1 bothered to reply, been out of work since March – Am beginning to think that its time for a change but difficult decision when you have only ever worked in Building Services – I can’t see things improving until the economy sorts itself out and who knows when that will be-Sorry to be pessimistic but the future looks bleak- Anyone need any decorating done? Anyone with any ideas?Or as Wincad says “Hold tight and be patient”

  15. My case even worst, I am a Architectural Cad Technician with 3.5 years experience (relatively young compare with you guys) , I have been made redundant since September 2008. Been looking for job other the cad work, just to earn a bit of money…..

  16. Yes I’m a land surveyor/setting out engineer. This is the first time in 30 years that I have seen it so bad. Only been looking since April though.

  17. Hi wincad, i speak to agents and its doom and gloom! who told you things were picking up, maybe i am contacting the wrong people!

  18. Yeah guys I am in the same boat as you all I have been out since April ….the last time it was like this was late 80′s…ben in industry for over 30yrs..this bad one…but I guess things will be picking up soon as from what I have been hearing….just have to hold tight..I guess.

    • Well thanks for the optimisiam,But I would not bank on it picking up at this time. I do not want to upset your day. I have applied for over 120 positions in this country and abroad. I have worked in building services 40 years and never known it so bad,we must all remember that the banking sectors is not functioning like it was people are affraid to speculate into our industry, they will do the bare necessary items especially on maintenance. As far as the Olympics go,you need to read some of the articals in the local east end papers on this,I am sure it will not come as no supprise what is happening their. either we all hold on tight or move on,it will be hard you will see soon, others will be be joining us no doubt on these pages.

  19. hi miles!!!! xx i guesss thats you?

  20. I thought there was going to lots of work for the Olympic Games buildings, does anyone know who has won all the contracts?

  21. like you ive been looking for work since january 09 for the first time in over 30 years it seems any agencies advertising posts on the web are just to attract cv’s as there is virtually nothing out there a job vacancy arising could be filled with just a few phone calls as so many people are on the look both contract and staff

    • I think you have it Phil, they want your CV but have nothing, have been made redundant since Jan 09,have been in the industry 40 years still have a few years to go.Have a considerable amount of experience in this country and abroad, I cannot see it oicking up for at least two year, minimum, It looks as if it will get a lot worse before it picks up.

    • Hi Phil, i work at an agency and your right it is very slow out there. i appreciate what high regard agents are held in as i was a contactor for years before doing this!!!! and its as frustrating for agency’s too! As for collecting cv’s your correct to a degree as it cant do any harm.

on the bright side we have had a few more enquiries in the last couple of weeks, whether this continues i dont know but fingers crossed eh!

we all want the same thing…. more work.

  22. I ve been looking since Jan 09, and a lot of friends in the same boat. I have seen a lot of bid managers roles & similar being posteds which must mean its starting to follow agian.

  23. Yeah, i have been looking since march. it seems a bit of a pattern

    • I am a M&E Cad Technician with 18years experience – I have been made redundant since January 2009. It is probably due to outsourcing to MidEast / India.
